Virginia Septic & Well Water Rules
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) runs the onsite sewage and private well program through local health districts.
This is a short state page. It covers only the facts we've verified from official sources so far.
Alternative system owners
- Owners of alternative onsite sewage systems (AOSS) must have them operated and maintained by a licensed operator and make sure required visits and sampling happen (12VAC5-613-140).
- Keep the operator's log and the approved operation and maintenance manual on the property, and pass both to the next owner.
